Brother Printer/Fax/Scanner Ink Problem?

I have a Brother MFC 290c, LC61 printer/scanner/fax machine. I got it used. All I want to do is print in black but my color cartridges are empty (so the printer keeps telling me to put in new ink). Why can't I just prink for black?
