Cell battery got wet while out of my phone. Will my phone still work with a new battery?

my 2 year old somehow got ahold of my phone, got the battery out, and started chewing on it. I can tell that there was water damage to the battery, and when i put it into the phone my phone won't turn on. I'm assuming (since there wasn't water damage to the phone) that i can get a new battery and the phone will work perfectly. I just wanna make sure before i buy a new battery. (Batteries are only like ten dollars, but if the phone's not gonna work i'd rather put that ten bucks toward a new phone.) thanks for any help!
